Museums & Gardens
Año Nuevo State Reserve
Año Nuevo State Reserve is the site of the largest
mainland-breeding colony in the world for the Northern elephant
seal.
Hours: The best time to observe the herd is December
through April. Special tour reservations are required.

Coyote
Point Museum for Environmental Education
The museum offers a multi-sensory introduction to the natural
history of the Bay Area. The Environmental Hall takes visitors
on an imaginary walk from San Francisco Bay to the Pacific
Ocean. The Wildlife Habitats offer natural settings to view
more than 30 live animals native to the Bay Area. Landscaped
gardens, picnic facilities, walking trails and views of
the Bay and San Francisco skyline round out this unique
museum experience.

Filoli
This magnificent estate features 16 acres of beautiful gardens.
The mansion, featured in "Dynasty" has been intact
since its completion in the early 1900s. Highlights of Filoli
include guided tours, tea and garden shops.
Hours: Filoli is open Tuesday through Saturday
between the hours of 10am and 3pm (last admission is at
2pm); closed on Sunday and Monday.

Fitzgerald
Marine Reserve
One of the largest and most diverse inter-tidal regions
and natural tide pool reserves in the state. Individual
and group tours are available.

Plymire
Schwarz Museum & Center
Fire Museum
A 1905 home originally owned by the first doctor in town
and was used as the only hospital between San Francisco
and San Mateo. The Fire Museum is located in the basement
level. The museum has an extensive collection of memorabilia.

The
Sanchez Adobe
Trace history from pre-historic Indian times through the
restoration in 1953. The Adobe was an Ohlone Indian village,
a mission farm, a cattle ranch, the home of Don Francisco
Sanchez, the home of General Edward Kirkpatrick, the Hotel
San Pedro, a speakeasy known as the Adobe House and an artichoke
storage facility.

San
Mateo County Historical Museum
The museum features exhibits on native Ohlone Indians, the
Spanish explorers, pioneer logging, local agriculture and
farming, whaling, transportation, and the Victorian era
of great estates on the Peninsula.

San Francisco Historical Society
Historical Society Museum
Photographs and artifacts tracing the history of the "Industrial
City." One of the major highlights of this museum includes
a special exhibit about the early families who came to South
San Francisco. Vintage wedding gowns and other clothes are
also displayed. Free brochures for self-guided walking tours
are available at the museum.

Sports and Golf
South San Francisco is influenced by its coastal location,
keeping hot summer temperatures under control and offering
access to the San Francisco Bay for water sports and boating
activities.

Point Marina
Oyster Point Marina/Park is one of San Mateo County's most
exciting new recreational facilities, with something for
everyone.

a jogging trail, picnic facilities

Pacifica
Pier
Just 15 minutes away in Pacifica you'll discover one of
the only open fishing piers in Northern California, along
with numerous surf shops to rent boogie boards and surfing
gear.

CYPRESS
GOLF COURSE AND LEARNING CENTER
It's
incredible, but this serene nine hole par 35 golf course
and lighted driving range is located only five minutes away
from South San Francisco or ten minutes from San Francisco
Airport in the city of Colma. The golf course features challenging
tight fairways framed by mature Cypress trees. In addition,
for improving your game there is a natural grass, short
game practice area and a 13,000 square foot putting green.
For your convenience there is club rental. The golf course
is open dawn until dusk, and the driving range is open at
least an hour after dusk.
