Following
Genentech's pioneering efforts, biotech has grown steadily
in South San Francisco with over 80 biotech firms in a two-square
mile industrial zone. The city's biopharmaceutical community
has also diversified to encompass a wide spectrum of bioscientific
related activities, making South San Francisco the birthplace
of the biotechnology industry and home to what is arguably
the highest concentration of commercial biotechnology companies
in the world. The California Healthcare Institute and Price
Waterhouse Coopers consulting firm reports that the biotech
industry is still growing in South San Francisco where among
the key findings are:
The
number of biotech firms grew from 20 in 1995 to approximately
51 in 2000. In 2001, it was found that 95 biotech-related
firms were located in South San Francisco.
Biotech
employment grew nearly 60 percent from 3,875 in 1995 to
6,150 in 2000.
During
the past five years, biotech generated $250 million worth
of construction activity.
The
growth in companies and employment is expected to accelerate
construction in South San Francisco.
Biotech
firms in South San Francisco have 70 experimental medicines
undergoing human clinical trials with the single largest
concentration of experiments aimed at novel treatments
for cancer.
